DeSantis signs bill limiting Florida book challenges, blames liberal activist

Gov. Ron DeSantis backtracked on Florida’s 2022 book-challenge law by signing a 2024 bill to narrow its scope​. His office cited Chaz Stevens – a South Florida activist “who has often lampooned government” – as an example of someone “abusing” the old law with performative book challenges, including dozens of petitions to remove the Bible and even dictionaries​. The new law limits outsiders like Stevens in how many book objections they can file, closing what DeSantis called a “wrong” use of the system​.
