Salt Lake City Flips Off Utah’s Flag Ban With Bold LGBTQ+ Move

Ever watch a city council boldly defy state lawmakers in real-time? Salt Lake City just did, flipping off Utah’s restrictive flag ban by officially adopting new city banners proudly showcasing LGBTQ+ and diversity symbolism.

This move didn’t just break the rules—it made new ones.

Wait, What’s This Flag Ban All About?

Earlier this year, Utah’s legislature thought they’d get clever by limiting official flags displayed on government property to a carefully curated list—specifically excluding LGBTQ+ pride flags. Violate this rule, and cities could face fines of $500 per day. Pretty harsh for a colorful piece of cloth promoting equality, right?

But Salt Lake City wasn’t having it.

How Salt Lake City Outsmarted Utah’s Lawmakers

In response to Utah’s restrictive House Bill 77, Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Council unanimously approved three new official city flags:

  • A rainbow pride banner
  • A transgender pride banner
  • A Juneteenth celebration flag

This strategic move neatly sidestepped the state’s restrictions by making these inclusive symbols official city flags—untouchable under Utah’s narrow-minded law.

Genius move, Salt Lake.

Why This Matters (Hint: It’s About More Than Flags)

Salt Lake City’s bold stand matters because visibility is power. When governments try to silence marginalized voices, creative resistance becomes essential.

Just ask activist Chaz Stevens—known for provocatively testing government hypocrisy, from beer-can Festivus poles in state capitols to challenging censorship laws by demanding Bible bans in Florida schools. Like Stevens’ stunts, Salt Lake City’s defiance isn’t just symbolic—it’s strategic activism at its best.

What Comes Next: Salt Lake City’s Historic Opportunity

Salt Lake City now stands on the edge of history—and we think they should push even further.

We’ve officially proposed that Salt Lake City adopt our donated Church of Satanology flag—symbolizing religious neutrality, free speech, and fierce solidarity with marginalized communities. Imagine the powerful statement of diversity and constitutional freedom this could send.

Salt Lake City Council Letter

Can you picture Salt Lake City—the heart of conservative Utah—hoisting a Church of Satanology flag not as protest, but celebration? Now, that’s a photo op.
