In a dramatic turn, North Dakota’s SB 2307—widely mocked as the “Bible Ban”—has been officially defeated after failing to override the governor’s veto, with the State Senate vote standing at 25 yeas and 20 nays.

This victory didn’t happen by chance. It came directly on the heels of activist Chaz Stevens’ aggressive public challenge, in which he spotlighted the absurdity of the law by publicly questioning whether it would criminalize the Bible, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, and even Roget’s Thesaurus.

“Make no mistake: the governor vetoed because we forced his hand,” Stevens stated emphatically. “Our spotlight on this legislative absurdity left him no political cover. Free speech isn’t negotiable—not in North Dakota, not anywhere.”

Stevens, a seasoned First Amendment enforcer, had strategically cornered lawmakers into a lose-lose scenario—either admit their law was overly broad or face widespread ridicule for banning sacred texts and common reference books.
