Does North Dakota’s SB 2307 Ban the Bible? Chaz Stevens Takes Aim

Could North Dakota’s controversial new obscenity law actually lead to banning the Bible? That’s exactly the kind of provocative question First Amendment firebrand Chaz Stevens has raised in a bold new challenge directed squarely at Attorney General Drew Wrigley.

The Curious Case of SB 2307

Recently signed into law, North Dakota’s SB 2307 is intended to protect minors from obscene materials. But Stevens argues this overly broad legislation could backfire spectacularly—ensnaring not just explicit content but even sacred texts and everyday reference books.

In a formal request to AG Wrigley, Stevens meticulously lays out the unintended consequences of SB 2307, using biting clarity to underscore just how far-reaching this law could be .

Exhibit A: The Bible

Stevens doesn’t pull punches, highlighting biblical passages that could now be legally questionable:

  • Incest and orgies (Genesis 19:30-38)
  • Horse-sized lust (Ezekiel 23:20)
  • Cannibal curses (Leviticus 26:29)
  • Baby-smashing psalms (Psalm 137:9)

If SB 2307 genuinely aims to purge obscenity, Stevens suggests it must also confront the uncomfortable question: Does North Dakota now have to ban the Bible?

Exhibit B: Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Stevens expands his challenge beyond scripture, taking aim at one of the most respected reference sources:

  • Definitions of explicit sexual terms and vulgar slang
  • Clinical descriptions of sexual acts
  • Commonly used profanity

“If Webster’s too spicy for North Dakota, then what reference book is safe?” Stevens provocatively asks AG Wrigley .

Exhibit C: Roget’s Thesaurus

Even Roget’s Thesaurus isn’t spared scrutiny, noted by Stevens for its historically explicit synonyms for terms like “fornication,” “promiscuity,” and “prostitution.”

“If even your thesaurus isn’t safe, maybe it’s time to reconsider your definitions of obscenity,” says Stevens .

Stevens’ Challenge to AG Wrigley

In his fiery letter to Attorney General Wrigley, Stevens puts forth a stark ultimatum: Either SB 2307 bans these texts, rendering it absurd, or it doesn’t, exposing it as toothless political theater.

“Say no, and it’s a toothless prop for grandstanding. Say yes, and your churches lose their Good Book. Pick your poison, General—your law’s on trial,” Stevens boldly states.

This is far from Stevens’ first rodeo. His activism previously forced Florida Governor Ron DeSantis to rewrite his state’s book ban law, embarrassed school districts, and triggered national conversations on censorship and free speech .

Stevens’ Plan to Donate “Obscene” Texts

Echoing his strategies from Florida and Arkansas, Stevens has publicly committed to donating thousands of multilingual, stylistically provocative posters to North Dakota schools—compliant yet challenging interpretations of new censorship laws. These planned donations will force school districts into difficult positions, compelling clarity from lawmakers .

The Bigger Picture

Stevens’ provocative methods aren’t merely stunts—they’re deliberate efforts to force governments into a constitutional reckoning. By pushing legislation to its logical extremes, he exposes the underlying hypocrisy and selective enforcement of censorship laws nationwide.
